Why I Left the Charismatic Movement
Within Christianity, there are many streams, many movements. All true Christians are united around the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, within the Big-C Church there are movements that disagree on some of the peripheral issues. And what happens when you dig a little deeper is that sometimes you realize that some of those issues aren’t very peripheral, but turn out to be more central.
One of those movements, and the one we’re going to dig into today, is the so-called Charismatic movement. Our goal in this episode is not to throw anybody under the bus, but rather to follow Scripture and “test every spirit.” My guest, Dawain Atkinson, is going to help me do that by sharing his own story.
Dawain Atkinson was born and raised in Turkey, North Carolina (not the country). He has never been afraid of public speaking and has an outgoing yet relate-able personality. Radio hosting and/or podcasting has always been his destiny. Dawain currently resides in the upstate area of South Carolina. Dawain is married to Andrietta Atkinson and they have 4 children Dearion , Jaiden, Karyssa, and Syvanna.
The Host of the B.A.R. Podcast shares his story of how his spiritual journey took him out of the religious tradition he grew up in, where he landed, and how hosting the B.A.R. (Biblical And Reformed) has continued to shape his theology and worldview.
Episode Highlights
My listeners tend to be Christians who are looking to hone their skill in theology, sharing the Gospel, and defending the faith. And we all love a good story--especially of someone who has gone on a similar journey. And I know yours is very compelling. What do my listeners need to understand about Dawain Atkinson and your own personal, theological journey?
You were in the Charismatic movement. What was that like?
And what were the top factors that catalyzed a change for you? What made you question it, and what caused you to finally leave?
Now, when you left Charismatic Pentecostalism, you didn’t lose your faith, I know that. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Where did you wind up?
What role has hosting the B.A.R. Podcast played in your ongoing theological journey?
What about speaking in tongues… I’ve never done that. Would you say that was authentic or not? Were you faking it?
Let’s talk about a couple objections folks might have. What pushback have you gotten since you left the Charismatic Movement, if any?
What advice would you give for any listeners who may be currently in the Charismatic Movement?
Dawain, thank you so much for joining me. How can folks connect with you? And feel free to tell us about any projects you’re working on right now.
