Thanks for signing up for the Think Update. I'm working on stripping these emails down a bit more, to get you the tools you need faster, while allowing you to look them up and do more research on your own, if you want to do so.

How's your Christmas shopping going? Do you have a Christmas list, where you share the items you hope your family members will buy for you? However you're getting the word out about the gifts you want this year, I've got three books for you to add to your list.

All three are excellent, but each one brings something different to to the table to equip and encourage you in your Gospel-engaged lifestyle.

Thanks for reading. Until next time, I hope it makes you think!

Book 1: A Christian Manifesto, by Francis Schaeffer

In my humble opinion (which of course I think is 100% correct), Francis Schaeffer was one of the greatest worldview thinkers of the 20th Century.
Notice how he humbly titles this book, "A" Christian Manifesto, rather than "The" Christian Manifesto. Sure, this is just "one" way of expressing what Christians believe and profess at our current moment in history.
Yet while it might not be completely definitive (and probably isn't his best book ever), it is very good, and extremely wise. Though Schaeffer was writing decades ago (in 1991), he hits the nail on the head when it comes to articulating just where the Church would need to draw the line in the sand on various issues.

If you read it, let me know what you think.

Book 2: Letters Along The Way, by D. A. Carson & John Woodbridge

This one was recommended to me by my brother Parker (the other Son of Thunder--get all S.O.T. episodes here). By the time I finished the first few chapters of this book, I didn't like it. I thought it was boring and kind of basic.

However, I kept reading, and by the time I had finished I didn't want it to end. I had actually grown emotionally attached to the main characters. And for a guy with all the emotions of a robot (according to my wife, sometimes) that's saying a lot. This is good for #discipleship

Book 3: Is Christianity Good For The World?

Now here is a worthy read. Back in 2009, (pastor) Douglas Wilson and the late (anti-theist) Christopher Hitchens filmed a documentary, a series of debates called Collision.

This book was released to accompany that film. It's a lively back-and-forth between the two men, who each admirably argue for their positions. Spoiler alert: neither one changed the other's mind. However, you'll be challenged and equipped by reading their exchange, and you may encounter some arguments you hadn't considered before, from both sides. Read it and boost your #apologetics.
