General Revelation and Presuppositional Apologetics (For Fathers) with Dr. Owen Anderson
Picture this, ThinkSquad: you're driving south on 65 through Indiana with your family . It's the middle of August, and it's about 8pm. From horizon to horizon, big white windmills rise above the crops. It's just getting dark enough where you can start to see their red lights blinking in unison. And there, off to the right, you see the sunset. It's brilliant. The clouds seem to be burning with fiery shades of pink, purple and orange.
You yell back to your kids, "Hey kids, look at this!" They take off their headphones and say, "What, Dad?" "Look at that sunset!" They look, and are appropriately awed. Because you don't want to miss this teachable moment, you say, "Only the true and living God could create a sunset like that. The Bible says 'The heavens declare the glory of God.' And sunsets like that one really reveal how awesome the Lord is!"
"But Dad, you hear a voice pipe up from the way back, "Why does it have to be our God? Why couldn't some other god have created that sunset? Like, how do we know the heavens aren't declaring the glory of a different god?"
How would you respond?
How you answer that question, which is really an apologetics question—having to do with vindicating the truth of the Christian message—will reveal what you believe about General Revelation—God's truth revealed not in the Bible but in the natural world (if it's in the Bible, we call it Special Revelation). Wouldn't it be great if we had a thoughtful response ready? If we could get some help thinking through General Revelation and exactly what it really does tell us about God… and how we know which God (as though there could be more than one!) nature truly reveals.
In today's episode, that's what we're talking about. And that's why I've brought in Dr. Owen Anderson. Dr. Anderson has been tackling questions like this for over 20 years. He's a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University. I've had him on to talk about Luciferian myths in Hollywood movies and the deeper, philosophical meaning of Job. Today we're diving into General Revelation, a topic he knows a lot about, and one I'm trying to learn more about—maybe just like you.
We get into:
Why is General Revelation important to know about?
What is General Revelation, and what can it teach us? What does the Bible say about it?
The Argument from Divine Hiddenness
Does General Revelation reveal "a" god or "the" God?
What does General Revelation actually reveal about God?
Does General Revelation reveal the Trinity?
How to use General Revelation in a presuppositional apologetic
What Dads need to know to equip their kids to interpret General Revelation
