How Can Knowing God More Help Me Share My Faith With Confidence?
I was asked, “How can I know God more and learn how I can share my faith in Jesus with confidence in a fallen world?” To answer this, let’s look at what the Bible says about how to know God, how to grow more confident in your faith, how to share your faith, and how to conquer your fear.
It all starts with knowing the Lord. As you grow in your knowledge of God, you will come to fear Him more. And when you fear God rightly, you discover that you don’t need to fear anyone else. Boom—instant confidence.
How Do I Approach God With Confidence?
In and of ourselves, we have no business approaching the Lord God Almighty. We are sinners, and God is perfectly holy.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Ro 3:23).
“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 Jn 1:8).
“Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins” (Ec 7:20).
“The Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence” (Ps 11:5).
“The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers” (Ps 5:5).
The only way we may approach the throne of God is through Jesus Christ.
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (Jn 14:6).
We often think of John 14:6 as referring to salvation, but it is true in all of life. How can we approach almighty God in prayer? In worship? Only through Christ. This is because Christ, God’s Son, died for our sins, taking the record of our guilt upon Himself. He wiped our slate clean, earning us justification before God through faith. For Jesus’ sake, we who believe in Him are forgiven and declared to be righteous.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Ro 5:8).
“By canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross” (Cl 2:14).
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ro 5:1).
Having been reconciled to God through Christ, now we may approach Him boldly and confidently.
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (He 4:16).
This is the basis for our getting to know God better.
How Does Your Faith Become Confidence?
The more we get to know God through Christ, the more confident we grow. We see the Lord providing for our daily needs, protecting us from evil, and strengthening us for the work He has called us to. Over time, our belief in Him (our faith) grows and we become confident. This confidence is not in ourselves, but in God.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand: (Is 41:10).
“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us” (1 Jn 5:14).
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Ph 4:13).
We get to know God through studying His word, through participating and serving in our local church body, through prayer, and through fellowship in a community of other believers.
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me” (Jn 15:4).
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (1 Tm 2:15).
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace” (1 Pe 4:10).
“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (He 10:25).
How Can You Share And Spread Your Faith to Others?
The Gospel is the good news of Christ’s atoning death and resurrection, which comes with a call to repentance and faith in Him unto eternal life. Sharing the Gospel with the intent to persuade is called evangelism.
What prevents us from evangelizing?
We might be afraid of being judged, or of being misunderstood, or of being mocked. We might fear being asked a question we can’t answer. Or we might just not want to get dragged into a lengthy discussion or debate about theology.
However, as we grow closer to the Lord, these fears dissipate. The closer a man gets to God, the more he finds his will aligning with what the Bible says God’s will is. The more we pray and study Scripture, both by ourselves and in community, the more the Holy Spirit fills us and empowers us to carry out God’s will. In Scripture we see this happening as early Christians spoke in other languages, boldly preached the word, and performed great evangelistic signs.
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (1 Pe 3:9).
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance” (Ac 2:4).
“And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit” (Ac 13:52).
If we want to share the faith with others effectively, we must do so in the power of the Holy Spirit. We can study, prepare, practice and preach, but real power for heart change comes only from Him.
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” (1 Co 3:6–7).
How Can I Share My Faith Without Fear?
It’s natural to have fear when it comes to articulating and defending your beliefs. Our society is growing increasingly hostile toward the things of God.
However, God promises that He is greater, that His word is truth, and that He will empower us to execute His plan in the world. As we get to know God better, we gain confidence to share our faith in a sinful world.
“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 Jn 4:4).
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Ac 1:8).
