Contradictions in the Bible? If the Bible’s Authors Lied, Nothing Makes Sense

Welcome back to The Think Institute Newsletter. Every Friday, you get one idea from me, one quote from somebody else, and something to think about.

AN IDEA FROM ME

“Well, now you're saying that you don't trust the biblical authors... Now you're not talking about an honest mistake being made by a scribe. Now we're talking about nefarious interpolations into the text. And that's a different question entirely. It's a question of whether we can trust the Bible's authors—were they theologically motivated to lie?

If that's the case, it actually undermines all of Scripture, which means you've lost the foundation for logic, science, and even—dare I say—the study of history itself.”

A QUOTE FROM SOMEBODY ELSE

“A differentiation in detail doesn’t necessarily amount to a contradiction. If [the Gospels] all said the same thing, you could accuse them of collaborating and collusion. If every account was identical, you don't need four accounts. The fact that they differ slightly—and they don't make the changes to make them match up—offers more authenticity.”

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

If there were true contradictions in the Bible, what impact would that have on your faith?
How do you respond when someone claims the Bible has contradictions?
